Lanark County OPP and the Smiths Falls Police Service frequently warn us about scams that are making the rounds.
Here’s another one. The OPP is warning the public about scammers impersonating police and bank investigators.
Fraudsters are using the OPP’s non-emergency number to trick victims into transferring money or sharing personal information.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) report similar scams, where callers claim to be law enforcement officials investigating fraudulent bank transactions.
Scammers use caller ID spoofing and fake emails with official logos to appear legitimate. They pressure victims to send money, provide banking details or assist in a fake investigation.
The OPP advises people to hang up and verify any claims by contacting their bank directly using a trusted number. Legitimate agencies will never ask for funds, gift cards or cryptocurrency.
To report fraud, contact local police, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or the CAFC at 1-888-495-8501. More information is available at antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca.
