A powerful winter storm is set to hit the region tonight, bringing heavy snowfall and dangerous travel conditions.
Environment Canada warns that up to 40 cm of snow could fall by Thursday afternoon. The heaviest snowfall is expected overnight and into Thursday morning, with rates possibly exceeding 5 cm per hour. Visibility will be poor in heavy snow.
Travel is strongly discouraged. Rapidly accumulating snow may cause road closures and major delays during the Thursday morning commute.
If travel is necessary, drivers should inform others of their plans and carry an emergency kit. Public Safety Canada advises keeping water, food, medicine, a first-aid kit, and a flashlight on hand. More information on emergency preparedness is available at getprepared.gc.ca.
Snowfall will gradually taper off Thursday afternoon, but cleanup efforts could take time. Residents are urged to stay informed and take precautions.
