With a lot of melting expected in the coming days and weeks, the South East Health Unit reminds us that spring flooding and thawing snow may put well water safety at risk. Particularly when water ponds around wells.
The South East Health Unit advises residents whose wells are impacted to boil water for one minute or use an alternate safe water source until testing confirms its safety.
If your property is prone to flooding, take steps to protect your home. Monitor weather alerts, ensure drainage systems are clear, and move valuable items to higher ground. Store chemicals properly, prepare fuel for generators, and have an emergency kit with important supplies.
The Health Unit recommends regular water testing, especially after heavy rain or flooding, as bacteria may be present without affecting taste or smell. Test your well water at least three times a year or after any weather events. For more information on water safety, visit the South East Health Unit website or call 1-800-660-5853.
