Two biometric monitoring systems are being installed at the Smiths Falls Police cells.
Police Chief Jodi Empey says it’s non-invasive, no individuals are going to be hooked up to anything.
Cornwall Police uses the same system in their cells.
Empey added it’s another layer of protection, particularly with drug users.
The monitoring systems will be placed in two of the five cells: one designated for young offenders and females, and another designated for males.
The special constable on duty will continue regular cell checks as well as review the video cameras.
The total cost including installation is $8,214.99, with an annual operating fee of $2,376 for the two.
Smiths Falls Police told myFM Friday morning that installation was initially set for Friday, but the company had to reschedule.
