Experts say don’t wait to check your child’s speech — help is free and easy
May is Speech and Hearing Month in Canada, and local health experts are urging families to take early action if they’re concerned about a child’s speech or hearing.
Dr. Linna Li, Deputy Medical Officer of Health, says Language Express is a free, government-funded Preschool Speech and Language Program for local children.
The program supports kids from birth to school entry with assessments, therapy, and practical tools for parents.
Catherine Robinson, Manager of Language Express says its not something to put off.
Parents can use the free online Communication Checkup tool on their website.
She suggests that you use the tool every six months from birth to age four. It can be found at www.language-express.ca.
If needed, referrals can be made online or by calling 1-888-503-8885. Robinson notes though that children starting school in 2025 must be referred by September 1.
They also wanted to share that families with hearing concerns can call 1-855-544-3400, ext. 23175 and press 5 for more information.
