
Rideau Lakes council expressed strong opposition to Bill 5, which recently passed second reading.
If it passes its third and final reading, the bill would repeal the Endangered Species Act, and allow the province to designate “special economic zones” that fit criteria to be developed by cabinet.
The Endangered Species Act would be replaced with similar language environmental groups claim is weaker.
Deputy Mayor Paula Banks says this is unacceptable legislation.
Councillor Sue Dunfield put the motion on the floor and spoke of her opposition.
“We are taking bold action to protect Ontario in the face of economic uncertainty by speeding up construction so we can lower housing costs and keep workers on the job,” said Rob Flack, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing in a media release.
“The legislation we’re tabling today responds to recommendations and requests from municipal leaders, and will help build the homes and infrastructure Ontario needs.”
Mayor Arie Hoogenboom shared his thoughts.
The Township passed a motion expressing their opposition to the bill.
