Emergency Room nurses Tiffany Fortune and Nicole Recoskie as well as Dr. Charlotte Dawson were presented with Guardian Angel Pins recently.
Al Roberts, the former Managing Director of the Almonte General Hospital Fairview Manor Foundation, presented pins to his Guardian Angels.
Roberts, who spent years advocating for putting the best tools in our doctors’ hands, had firsthand experience of the work of staff.
Late on Christmas Day in 2024, Roberts was brought into the AGH Emergency Department.
What started as cold symptoms, runny nose, chest congestion, cough etc. had progressed quickly to severe difficulty breathing, fever, inability to stand, and incontinence.
“In the two days I had slept at home, fighting what I thought was a cold or nasty flu, I had developed pneumonia which sent my body into septic shock. My kidneys were failing, and my blood pressure was dangerously low” Roberts said in a media release.
The entire team working that night, including Fortune, Recoskie, and Dr. Dawson, moved very quickly to assess Roberts and began treatment within minutes of his arrival.
The next few hours were critical as they began to use more advanced breathing systems, administering antibiotics, and monitoring his whole body.
Dr. Dawson made the important decision that Roberts needed to be transported by Ornge Ambulance to the ICU at the Queensway Carleton Hospital.
“I believe they saved my life,” Roberts said.
“Going to the emergency room at the AGH that night was a very good decision and I’m incredibly thankful for the team that was working that Christmas night.”
