Smiths Falls council looks set to approve the construction of a temporary gravel parking lot on Ferarra Drive for Cataraqui trail users at their next council meeting.
Councillor Chris McGuire said he’s never seen street parking full in that part of town and questions this lots necessity.
He’d prefer council look into establishing an in-town trail hub which connects the Cataraqui trail with the OVRT and any other networks they build.
Councillor Dawn Quinn sits on the trail’s board and said the lot offers an alternative to street parking and peace of mind for long-term trail users.
Director of Community Services Stephanie Clark also offered an explanation about the lots purpose.
The gravel lot will serve as a temporary measure as council and staff have plans to discuss a more significant investment to establish a permanent trailhead location that’ll encourage users to go through the town.
Council approved $40,000 in the 2024 capital budget begin the first phase of the project.
Future enhancements may include accessible washroom facilities, water services, rest areas, and more.
