Rideau Lakes council has called on Mayor Arie Hoogenboom to resign.
Councillor Paula Banks put forth the motion, and said one of the reasons was the mayor’s use of strong mayor powers to kill the chantry municipal office retrofit, which she said was done in bad faith.
Banks also cited Hoogenboom’s second use of strong mayor powers, when he directed staff to compile a total number of recorded votes executed in this council term, as well as tally up the total number of integrity commissioner reports, as another reason for the motion.
She also took issue with Hoogenboom and some other councillors voting to impose 15-day pay suspensions on her and councillor Jeff Banks following a March integrity commissioner report that recommended the pair offer only an apology.
Those suspensions were later unanimously repealed, with the mayor later declining to apologize.
Jeff Banks says Hoogenboom acted out of turn with those pay suspensions.
Deputy Mayor Debroah Hutchings spoke to the reasons why she voted in favour of the motion, which also included a second non-confidence vote.
The motion passed 4-2 with Councillors Ron Pollard and Marcia Maxwell opposed.
Councillor Sue Dunfield was absent and Hoogenboom had left before the vote took place.
We’ll have comments from the mayor Friday morning.
