The Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority (MVCA) has issued a Level II Low Water Statement as drought conditions worsen across the Mississippi River Watershed.
From June through August, the region saw below-average rainfall combined with higher-than-normal temperatures, leaving streams and reservoirs at critically low levels.
In the past 30 days, rainfall dropped to less than 40 per cent of seasonal averages, causing streamflow in some areas to fall to less than half of the lowest recorded summer monthly flow. Several tributaries are now at only 30 per cent of normal.
The MVCA is urging all residents and businesses not connected to Ottawa’s municipal water system to cut water use by 20 per cent. Water permit holders are asked to reduce actual water takings wherever possible.
Officials recommend conservation steps such as using rain barrels, limiting outdoor watering, and avoiding pressure washers. Residents are also asked to exercise extreme caution on waterways.
