The Town of Smiths Falls is reminding residents that electronics and chargers should never be placed in recycle bins or garbage cans, warning that they pose serious risks if handled improperly.
Putting items like cell phones, chargers, or small electronics in recycling and garbage can cause fires in collection trucks and sorting facilities.
Damaged batteries are especially dangerous, as they can spark and lead to injuries or costly equipment damage.
Instead, residents are urged to bring unwanted electronics to safe drop-off sites, including the REAL Deal Store in Smiths Falls.
Improper disposal of electronics also harms the environment, as batteries and circuit boards contain toxic materials that can leak into soil and water.
By using designated drop-off locations, residents help keep workers safe while protecting the community.
