The compost site at County Road 43 underwent groundwater and soil testing in March, and
Smiths Falls Director of Public Works Paul McMunn noted some discrepancies.
McMunn was asked by Mayor Shawn Pankow if this impacted the town’s drinking water as the site’s close to the municipal intake.
The town says the elevated metals may reflect natural soil and rock conditions rather than contamination from the compost site.
For the soil samples with higher cadmium, lead, and zinc, the town believes the likely explanation is natural background levels in the soil or possibly historic land use and deposited materials over the years.
A summary report will be presented at a future meeting.
