Conservative MP Frank Caputo has introduced Bill C-225 to Parliament on Thursday.
The Kamploops-Thompson-Nicola MP called it the most significant bill to address intimate partner violence when he addressed the house.
The bill passed the first of three required readings before it becomes law.
Lanark-Frontenac MP Scott Reid expressed his support, posting on social media, “It is time to end the cycle of IPV, punctuated by economic and emotional dependence.”
Caputo further explained what the bill would include.
The bill would also restrict release from custody for repeat offenders, and allow courts to order risk-of-reoffending assessments.
