Perth councillors received a presentation on the benefits of using solar photo-voltaic systems to offset their annual electricity bills and to reduce reliance on gas-powered hydro generation facilities. Don MacKenzie provided the numbers on what Perth pays today.
Don said the problems with costs and system capacity will only get worse without action
Current regulations require solar systems to be located where the power will be used for smaller installations and Don reported that Perth has a perfect site for a first installation.
He urged councillors to lobby provincial reps to move to virtual net-metering regulations on solar systems to permit off-site generation to offset hydro usage at other buildings.
Council’s committee voted to instruct staff to bring forward a report on using solar systems for the Town at a future meeting.
