Smiths Falls secures over $1 million insurance payout after public works fire
Smiths Falls is receiving more than $1 million from its insurance company following a February fire that caused significant damage to the town’s public works garage.
Town council approved the insurance settlement during its committee of the whole meeting on October 14.
The funds will help support plans for a new, multimillion-dollar public works facility to replace the one destroyed earlier this year.
The fire, which broke out in February, caused extensive damage and forced the town to relocate some of its operations. Since then, officials have been reviewing design options and costs for a modern facility that will better meet the community’s needs.
While full construction timelines have yet to be confirmed, council members say the insurance payout provides a strong starting point for rebuilding efforts and ensures that Smiths Falls can move forward with renewed confidence in restoring its critical infrastructure.
