The Town of Smiths Falls is taking another step toward sustainability with the arrival of its first fully electric ice resurfacer — the Engo Ice Wolf, affectionately nicknamed Sherlock Ohms by arena staff.
The new machine replaces an aging propane-powered unit at the Smiths Falls Memorial Community Centre, cutting greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 9 to 10 tonnes of CO? annually — the equivalent of burning more than 4,000 litres of propane.
Beyond the environmental benefits, the Engo Ice Wolf offers a quieter, fume-free experience for skaters and spectators while reducing long-term operating costs.
“Our team is very pleased to introduce Sherlock Ohms to the community,” said Stephanie Clark, Director of Community Services. “This isn’t just about upgrading equipment — it’s about leading by example and taking meaningful steps toward a cleaner, safer community.”
The Engo Ice Wolf also includes safety and performance upgrades such as a quick-change blade system, automated auger cleaning, and a fully electric drivetrain. Operators are currently training on the new unit ahead of its first full season on the ice.
