As part of Cyber Security Awareness Month, the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, Ontario Provincial Police, and RCMP are warning Canadians about fraudsters posing as anti-fraud or police investigators.
Scammers are using fake CAFC letterheads, logos, and spoofed police phone numbers to trick victims into believing they’re part of an investigation. The most common scams include “bank investigator,” “tech support,” and “recovery pitch” schemes.
Fraudsters may claim your bank account was compromised, your computer has a virus, or that they can recover money lost to scammers — all in exchange for payment or personal information. Officials stress that police and the CAFC will never ask for money, remote computer access, or personal banking details.
Residents are urged to hang up immediately on suspicious calls and contact their bank, local police, and the CAFC at 1-888-495-8501 if targeted. Reporting helps protect others from falling victim to these evolving scams.
