Remembrance Day services were held across the country yesterday (Nov 11) and a large group of residents gathered in front of the Great War Memorial Hospital in Perth to pay their respects.
From senior veterans to young school children, a substantial number of area residents listened quietly as the names of those who lost their lives in two world wars were read aloud. Silver Cross Mother Nancy Thompson laid a wreath representing the sacrifice and loss of mothers who have lost children in military service to Canada . This act serves as a tribute to the sacrifices made by servicemen and women, honoring their families and the nation.
Wreaths were solemnly laid representing gratitude from the Governments of Canada and Ontario, the Canadian Armed Forces, Branch 244 of the Royal Canadian Legion Perth-upon-Tay, Lanark County, Perth and surrounding Townships. The clouds appropriately cleared at the end of the service letting the sun shine on Canadians’ acts of remembrance. When the poem by Captain John McRae, In Flanders Fields was read, the silence from those attending was almost deafening.
The wreaths will remain in front of the hospital for a period of time in silent tribute to the fallen.
