At Smiths Falls Police Service’s Board’s October meeting, Chief Jodi Empey presented the findings of a review of her officers’ actions during a June interaction with a member of the public that led to allegations of excessive use of force. She explained why she chose an outside source for the review and what was included in that assessment.
She indicated the full report from the Cornwall Service was reviewed by the board, her deputy chief and use-of-force instructors leading to her conclusions.
She noted that the Cornwall Service did provide some recommendations which she has instituted in Smiths Falls.
She added that she had to receive medications after being spit on by a subject and another member of her service had to go on antibiotics after being stuck with a hypodermic needle by a suspect who later tested positive for HIV. As the June matter is now before the courts, she didn’t elaborate any further.
