Smiths Falls council is considering a salary increase for the next term after a staff report found the town pays below average compared to similar Ontario municipalities.
During the Nov. 10 committee of the whole meeting, Treasurer Paul Dowber presented updated data showing the mayor currently earns $37,743, while councillors make $19,001. The average in comparable towns is $43,315 for mayors and $22,891 for councillors.
Staff recommend increasing the mayor’s pay by $5,572 and councillors’ by $3,890 starting Nov. 15, 2026. Salaries would then be adjusted annually to the Ottawa–Gatineau consumer price index.
The change would cost the town about $4,200 in 2026 and $32,000 in 2027. Coun. Steve Robinson supported the move, calling it long overdue.
Mayor Shawn Pankow noted compensation rarely motivates people to run for office but said updated pay may help with recruitment. A bylaw amendment will return to council for approval.
