At a special meeting of Mississippi Mills Council on November 13th, the 2026 budget for the municipality was finalized.
While new Super Mayor Powers give mayors exclusive authorization over budgets, Mayor Christa Lowry, like many others in Ontario, involved council and staff in the process. Councillors voted to have Christa table the budget on December 2nd with a 5.41% hike in property taxes, a 9.48% jump in the police levy, and a new 1% capital assets levy. For a Mills property assessed by the Province at their median value of $340K, it means $143 more next year.
Over 2 days of meetings in October, council and staff tackled the budget line by line. Staff had originally proposed a 9.67% jump in the police levy and an 8.1% hike in municipal taxes, not including the 1% capital assets levy. Council also voted to reduce the time limit for council amendments to the budget from 30 days to 3; to deem the budget adopted by Dec 9th.
In 2025 property taxes represented just over 2% of household income.
