Smiths Falls Fire Prevention Officer, Lieutenant Jason Smith
Smiths Falls Fire Prevention Officer Jason Smith says major updates to Ontario’s fire code will soon require carbon monoxide alarms on every level of every home — a change he calls one of the most important safety steps in years.
Beginning January 1, all Ontario households must install CO alarms on each floor, including basements and any area with a gas-fueled appliance or an attached garage. Smith says the update mirrors long-standing rules for smoke alarms and is designed to keep families safer during the winter season.
He recommends combination smoke-CO units to make compliance easier and ensure full coverage.
The department is also urging residents to test alarms regularly, replace expired units and choose devices certified by CSA, ULC or ETL. Smith says the holiday season — with heaters running, guests visiting and kitchens busy — is the right time to check.
The Smiths Falls Fire Department will share more safety reminders throughout December.
