Carleton Place council recently voted to direct staff to have a Cultural Heritage Evaluation Report for Riverside Park completed. The goal is to declare the entire park a Cultural Heritage Landscape. Councillors were very supportive of the plan.
Councillor Linda Seccaspina was happy to see movement on protecting the park for future generations.
The large parcel along the Mississippi River is well used and integral to the Town as Deputy Mayor Andrew Tennant noted.
As the park is also home to the Town’s water treatment plant, the question was raised about how a heritage designation might affect future expansion work.
Town planner Niki Dwyer noted there were processes that would permit those projects.
Council included funds in the 2026 budget to complete the evaluation report.
