Perth physician Dr. Alan Drummond recently spoke to violence towards healthcare staff in a video released by the Ontario Medical Association.
In the video, Drummond says violence amongst healthcare staff really increased following the COVID-19 pandemic, and he’s calling on stakeholders to address the growing concern.
The Canadian Medical Association’s 2021 National Physician Health Survey reports that roughly 80% of physicians have faced intimidation, bullying, harassment, or microaggressions in the workplace at some point in their careers.
In 2021, the federal government responded to calls for help from CMA, the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA), and the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions with legislation that made it illegal to use threats and bullying to stop a health worker from providing care to patients.
It also prohibits actions that would prevent a person from obtaining health services or accessing health facilities.
