The Counties of Frontenac, Renfrew and Lanark have taken a major step toward local stewardship of the historic K&P Trail.
The three counties have officially signed documents marking the start of the process to transfer ownership of sections of the trail from the Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority. The signing ceremony included Lanark County Warden Richard Kidd, Renfrew County Warden Peter Emon, Frontenac County Warden Bill Saunders, MVCA General Manager Sally McIntyre, and board chair Roy Huetl.
The K&P Trail is a former railway line that now serves as a multi-use recreational corridor across Eastern Ontario. Under the agreement, the counties will assume responsibility for maintenance, accessibility, and promotion once clear title is established. Until then, Lanark and Renfrew counties will lease their sections from the MVCA.
Kidd said trails like the K&P support tourism, local economies, and healthy lifestyles. MVCA officials said the counties are well-positioned to manage the trail’s long-term future.
The K&P Trail continues to attract hikers, cyclists, and visitors from across Ontario, offering scenic views, historic value, and affordable outdoor recreation.
