Due to a water main break on Spring Street, the Medical Officer of Health, in consultation with the Village of Westport, has issued a precautionary Boil Water Advisory.
Updates will be shared on the Westport Facebook Page.
Below are some tips to consider when under a boiling water advisory.
-
Boil tap water for at least 1 full minute (3 minutes if advised locally) before drinking, making ice, or mixing drinks.
-
Use bottled water if you have it—especially for kids, elderly people, or anyone immunocompromised.
-
Use boiled or bottled water for:
-
Brushing teeth
-
Washing fruits and vegetables
-
Making coffee/tea (unless your machine boils water long enough)
-
Baby formula
-
-
Discard ice made before or during the advisory.
Cooking
-
Food is safe if cooked with water that reaches boiling.
-
Wash dishes by:
-
Using a dishwasher with a sanitize/high-heat cycle, or
-
Hand-washing with boiled water and letting them air-dry.
-
-
Don’t rinse cooked food with unboiled tap water.
Personal Hygiene
-
Do not swallow water when brushing teeth—use boiled or bottled water.
-
Showering and bathing are generally OK, but:
-
Avoid getting water in your mouth.
-
Young children should take sponge baths if possible.
-
-
Wash hands with soap and tap water, then use hand sanitizer afterward as extra protection.
Pets
-
Give pets boiled or bottled water.
-
Don’t let them drink from toilets or puddles fed by tap water.
Appliances & Misc.
-
Turn off water-to-fridge ice makers and water dispensers.
-
Coffee makers, kettles, and electric kettles are fine only if they bring water to a rolling boil.
-
Replace or flush faucet filters once the advisory ends.
After the Advisory Is Lifted
-
Run taps for 5–10 minutes.
-
Flush appliances (coffee makers, ice machines).
-
Replace filters and throw out any stored water or ice from during the advisory.
