Fire departments across the Lanark–Frontenac–Kingston region are receiving new provincial funding aimed at improving firefighter safety and cancer prevention.
Ontario announced more than $707,000 through the Fire Protection Grant, which supports municipal fire services with equipment, training and upgrades. The province doubled the program this year, increasing total funding from $10 million to $20 million.
The funding focuses on cancer prevention initiatives, equipment to address lithium-ion battery fires and modernization of fire service infrastructure. Local MPP John Jordan says the investment will help departments respond more safely and effectively while protecting firefighters on the job.
In Smiths Falls, the fire department will receive $19,626.05 to purchase equipment including a fit tester, turnout gear, SCBA decontamination tools, a mobile dryer and equipment designed for electric vehicle fires.
