Smiths Falls says residents will need to wait until spring to cross the new pedestrian bridge at Confederation Park. Mayor Shawn Pankow says construction setbacks and the change of seasons pushed the opening date into 2026.
The timber span is nearly complete, but work on the stone approaches and paving must wait for warmer weather.
Pankow says engineers faced unexpected challenges with water flow on the west side of the river, which slowed progress earlier in the fall.
He says the bridge is designed as a long-term community destination and will be worth the wait.
The mayor also highlighted the project’s goal of creating a new waterfront experience, complete with viewing bump-outs where people can gather, relax and enjoy the water.
Council has yet to decide on a name for the new bridge, with that discussion expected later this winter.
