Local MPP Steve Clark has launched a petition urging Ottawa to restore full navigation at Kingston’s Lasalle Causeway before the 2026 boating season.
Clark tabled the petition at Queen’s Park, before the holiday break, highlighting the need for open access ahead of Rideau Canal’s 200th anniversary.
The Causeway feeds the Rideau Corridor from the St. Lawrence Seaway and Lake Ontario.
Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands & Rideau Lakes MP Michael Barrett has weighed in, saying the temporary bridge is no fix.
Mark Gerretsen Kingston and the Islands Liberal M-P says the temporary bridge that is in place is critical for those on land to get to their destinations.
In a Facebook post Gerretsen thanked Barrett. “Thank you for your advocacy and support for this initiative, Michael. Although I fundamentally disagree with the first resolve clause in this petition based on the local vehicular demand on this bridge (over 5000 cars per day use it including emergency vehicles), I wholeheartedly endorse and agree to the second resolve clause. A swift permanent solution will indeed benefit the entire region.”
Barrett responded by stating, “Different views aside, we agree the region needs a permanent solution without an unacceptably long delay. Public safety, commuters, and our local economy, including tourism, deserve better. Let’s get this done together.”
The petition states that extended closures of the causeway to marine traffic causes economic hardship to communities along the Rideau Canal, Like Smiths Falls.
