The Smiths Falls Fire Department is urging homeowners to be compliant with changes to Ontario’s fire code that came into effect New Year’s Day.
Fire Prevention Officer Jason Smith brings us up to date.
Smith adds that includes levels without a sleeping area.
Fire officials say the update is designed to give families more protection from CO, a colourless, odourless gas that can be deadly without warning. .
New CO alarms can be plugged in, hardwired or battery-operated, and firefighters say they should be installed according to the manufacturer’s instructions for best protection. Regular testing is also recommended.
Anyone with questions about the new rules or how many alarms their home needs can contact the Smiths Falls Fire Department at its non-emergency line, 613-283-5869.
Officials say they are happy to help residents understand the changes and stay safe.
