Ontario Provincial Police are urging residents to stay off the water after a dramatic snowmobile rescue on the Rideau River near Burritts Rapids.
Grenville OPP say officers were called around 8:30 p.m. after a snowmobiler went through the ice in North Grenville.
A large emergency response followed, including local fire services, Ottawa fire and police, and paramedics from Leeds and Grenville and Ottawa.
Crews worked together to safely pull the operator from the frigid water. Police say the rider was wearing a floating snowmobile suit and was travelling with another person, who was able to call 9-1-1 for help.
The operator was taken to hospital for treatment of hypothermia and later released.
OPP say the incident is a strong reminder that changing winter weather can make ice conditions unpredictable and dangerous.
Officers warn that travelling on ice should be avoided and snowmobilers should always check with local clubs before heading out. Wearing proper safety gear is also strongly recommended.
