Environment Canada has upgraded its weather alert to Orange as significant snowfall continues across eastern Ontario, including the 88.1 myFM and 92.3 WOW FM listening areas.
The alert was issued at 9:18 a.m. Thursday, January 15, with both impact level and forecast confidence listed as high. Snowfall totals of 20 to 35 centimetres are expected before the system weakens later tonight.
Officials say visibility will be reduced at times due to heavy snow and local blowing snow. The snowfall is forecast to continue through the morning and into the evening, tapering off overnight.
A low-pressure system moving through southern Ontario is responsible for the prolonged snow event. Very cold wind chills during the snowfall are expected to worsen conditions.
Travel is expected to be hazardous, with a significant impact likely during morning and afternoon rush hours. Motorists are urged to allow extra time and avoid non-essential travel where possible.
Residents are encouraged to monitor weather alerts and forecasts for updates as conditions evolve throughout the day.
