Firefighter cancer awareness month shines light on hidden risks in the fire service
Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month is putting a spotlight on the health risks faced by firefighters, including those serving with the Smiths Falls Fire Department.
Fire Prevention Officer Jason Smith says many people are surprised to learn that cancer is the leading cause of job-related deaths in the fire service.
Smith says firefighters are exposed to toxic chemicals released when modern materials burn, increasing long-term health risks.
Smith says every emergency call brings exposure to carcinogens from furniture, plastics and household products.
He says departments are taking steps to lower exposure, including gear decontamination, clean cabs and better hygiene.
Smith says awareness, early screening and healthy habits are key messages throughout January.
