Steven Welchner, chair of the Linden Housing Co-operative which is building a 36-unit affordable apartment building at 79 Wilson Street West in Perth, spoke of the hurdles his group had to overcome in a short time period to even be able to apply for CMHC funding.
He credits his project manager with getting construction-ready plans complete, and the community in raising the $200,000 required to start.
10 units in the building will be allocated through Lanark County’s rent-geared-to-income program.
Welchner gives us the run-down on the types of units the building will have.
Welchner is confident the Linden team has put everything in place to meet their December 2026 occupancy. For those interested in finding out more or to put their names on an interest list, he said their website has been updated.
The existing house on the lot will be converted into four apartments. The Linden Housing Co-operative is a not-for-profit environmentally responsible housing initiative designed to provide long-term and affordable housing. Find out more at lindencoop.ca
