Smiths Falls police have officially launched Project Lifesaver, a new tracking program designed to quickly locate vulnerable people who may wander from home.
Constable Sean Keogan says the Smiths Falls Police Service has partnered with the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada and Project Lifesaver International to bring the life-saving technology to the community.
He says the program supports people living with Alzheimer’s, dementia, autism and other cognitive or brain-injury conditions.
Families register a loved one and receive a bracelet or necklace that sends a unique signal to police.
Police say most participants are found in less than 30 minutes, often before larger search teams are needed.
The program can be life-saving for families facing the fear of a loved one disappearing.
Residents in Smiths Falls can sign up by contacting the Smiths Falls Police Service or the Alzheimer’s Society.
While there is a small cost associated with the program, the Alzheimer’s Society and Project Lifesaver are committed to working with families to help offset expenses.
To enroll a loved one, interested parties are encouraged to contact the Smiths Falls Police Service, the Alzheimer’s Society, or Sean McFadden directly at smcfadden@alzllg.ca or 866-576-8556 ext. 102.
