The Town of Perth is the latest community to issue an ice safety reminder as winter conditions continue across the region. Officials say there is no such thing as completely safe ice, and strength cannot be judged by appearance alone.
The municipality of Perth says changing temperatures, snow cover, water depth, currents and shifting loads can quickly weaken ice on lakes and rivers.
Before heading out, residents are urged to check ice thickness, ask locally about current conditions and avoid night travel and unfamiliar routes. Snowmobiles need at least five inches of clear, solid ice, while vehicles require eight to 12 inches.
People are also reminded to wear safety gear, go with a buddy and carry a safety kit.
Officials warn residents to avoid slushy or layered ice and areas near moving water.
