The Ontario Caregiver Organization says thousands of caregivers across the province are reaching a breaking point, often with nowhere to turn but the emergency room.
CEO Amy Coupal said the organization supports Ontario’s 4.2 million caregivers, including family members, friends, and neighbours who provide ongoing physical or emotional care.
New data shows nearly 69 per cent of caregivers say they are so burnt out they do not know how they will keep going. Coupal said burnout can be physical, emotional, or financial, noting caregivers spend an average of $750 a month out of pocket.
One in five caregivers reported taking the person they care for to the emergency department just to get a break. That could mean nearly two million ER visits in Ontario in one year, costing an estimated $650 million.
She added that planning ahead can make a real difference, encouraging caregivers to identify supports within their family, neighbourhood, or community.
The Ontario Caregiver Organization offers free supports, including a 24/7 helpline, peer support and coaching.
Coupal said reaching out early can help caregivers plan, feel less alone, and avoid crisis situations.
