Lanark County is moving to fix long-standing inconsistencies in how Highway 43 is named across Drummond North Elmsley and Montague Townships — a change aimed at improving emergency response and address accuracy.
A new report outlined plans to standardize the road’s name, which has variously been listed as County Road 43, Highway 43, and Highway 43 West since the route was downloaded from the province in 1998. Those discrepancies have created confusion for residents, first responders, mail delivery and digital mapping platforms, including Google Maps and the 911 Street Address Guide database.
The County, which maintains the official road registry, will lead the correction process in partnership with local municipalities. That includes updating parcel and mailing address data, notifying affected residents, and coordinating changes with Canada Post and emergency agencies.
Staff noted the move is considered a data correction rather than a formal renaming, with no major legal or financial impacts expected. Montague Township has indicated support for any related costs.
