A Perth veteran is leading a community effort to install a commemorative crosswalk honouring Canadian Armed Forces members — and time is ticking to raise the funds needed to make it happen.
Don Rideout says the idea began at home last fall after his wife saw a similar project in Carleton Place.
After initial safety concerns from council, the town agreed to allow the project near the Crystal Palace, across Basin Lane toward Town Hall. Rideout thought about the exposure the location would provide.
The town agreed to handle the labour, providing fundraising covers materials. Rideout says costs have climbed higher than expected. Paint, safety materials and stencils could total $5,000 to $6,000.
Fundraising includes a couple of raffles. One is for Ottawa Senators tickets, and donated prizes. The other prizes have been donated.

Details are below, and tickets can be purchased by e-transfer through Don’s e-mail address, or at the Perth Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion.
Businesses can also sponsor the project and will receive a poster to display in their window showing their support. Interested parties can email Don to find out more.
Rideout says community backing has been encouraging so far and he expects it to grow.
