At Perth council’s recent meeting, councillors were asked to confirm a committee motion to oppose the Alto high-speed rail project.
That motion stated that with the limited information and consultation that has been provided to date, Perth council does not support the proposed Alto High Speed Rail project; and, directs staff to forward this motion to Scott Reid, MP, John Jordan, MPP, and Martin Imbleau, President and CEO of Alto.
Councillor Gary Waterfield wanted to amend the motion to include support of a Hwy 401 corridor route; an idea supported by Premier Doug Ford and a number of Eastern Ontario municipalities. Most councillors were opposed to this amendment with Councillor Bird stating it made no sense to support a path not being considered by Alto nor the federal government in their current proposals.
At the end of the discussion, the motion of opposition was amended to mention the two routes listed by Alto but not to include support of a 401 route.
