Smiths Falls Police say reports of mischief and vandalism are climbing as spring weather draws more people outdoors.
Community Outreach Officer Sean Keogan says increased foot traffic often leads to more opportunities for property damage, including graffiti and other forms of vandalism.
He urged families to talk early with children about respecting property, noting damage affects homeowners, businesses and taxpayers alike.
Keogan added penalties are determined by the courts, and some municipalities also use bylaws as deterrents.
Despite the concerns, he says many residents are pitching in to clean up and take pride in their neighbourhoods.
