The provincial government has introduced regulatory changes under the Liquor Licence and Control Act to permit “bring-your-own” (BYOB) alcohol consumption at certain outdoor public events.
Effective April 30, event organizers may apply to the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) for a permit that allows attendees to bring and consume their own alcohol at designated events. Municipal participation is optional, and a municipal designation is typically required before a permit can be issued.
This issue was on the agenda for Perth council’s recent committee meeting.
Town Director Cathy McNally said her staff reviewed the idea and gave it a hard pass.
Councillor Jim Boldt reminded everyone that unlike licensed events, where trained staff ensures no one gets over-served and out of hand, a BYOB happening wouldn’t have any such safe-guards. Mayor
Judy Brown said it could easily turn family events into something very negative.
Council’s committee unanimously agreed to give BYOB a pass.
