A new community art program in Perth is being called a success after bringing residents together through creativity and connection.
The Perth Family Health Team launched “Community Canvas,” a five-week initiative inviting people of all skill levels to take part in a guided group painting project. Led by local artist Maureen McNeil, the program focused on collaboration rather than experience.
Participants worked side by side to create a shared piece of art, now on display at the Health Team’s Sunset Boulevard clinic. Organizers say the program helped build confidence and friendships in a welcoming setting.
Health Promoter Tracy Birrell says the goal was to create a space where people could try something new and connect with others in the community.
The program is based on research showing creative activities can improve mental health, reduce isolation and support overall well-being.
Organizers say more community-focused programs are planned in the months ahead.
