Sexual Assault Prevention Month in May will bring awareness events, survivor support initiatives and community education to Lanark County, according to Lanark County Interval House.
Executive Director Erin Lee said the month is focused not only on supporting survivors, but also preventing sexual violence through education, consent awareness and bystander intervention. A “We Believe Survivors” banner campaign, Red Dress events in Almonte and Smiths Falls, and a textile-based community art project are among activities planned.
Lee said prevention is a shared responsibility.
The episode also highlights a May 8th webinar examining efforts to address violence nationally and internationally.
Lee said communities also have a role in challenging harmful behaviour before violence occurs.
Lee added healing for survivors can take many forms, while listeners were encouraged to learn about consent, local supports and ways to help end sexual violence.
