Dry weather and gusty winds are creating dangerous burning conditions in the Perth area, with local fire crews already seeing an increase in grass fires.
Perth Fire Chief Trevor Choffe says the last couple of weeks have kept firefighters busy as wind pushes flames and embers farther than many people expect.
The Chief says conditions can change quickly.
Choffe said residents should always check with their local fire department before lighting any outdoor fire, especially during dry stretches.
In Perth, he said residents need a burn permit, though the permit is free. Rules are strict within town limits, where burning is generally limited to campfires unless a property is larger than two acres.
Choffe said smoke, not just flames, is a major concern in urban neighbourhoods where homes are close together.
He said burning leaves or yard waste is not allowed in Perth because of the added risk during dry conditions.
Residents can find permit details and local burning rules through the Town of Perth’s website. Perth.ca.
