Lanark County marked Paramedic Services Week last week by recognizing the growing role paramedics play in emergency response, community care and the wider healthcare system.
Paramedic Services Week ran from May 17 to 23. This year’s provincial theme was “Better Care Starts Here.”
Lanark County officials say the theme reflected the changing work of paramedics across Ontario. Their role now includes emergency response, critical patient care, prevention, outreach, community paramedicine and stronger partnerships with healthcare and public safety agencies.
Lanark County Paramedic Service Chief Travis Mellema said paramedicine continues to evolve in meaningful ways.
He said staff show the professionalism, compassion and adaptability needed to meet the changing needs of local communities.
Mellema said paramedics make a difference every day, whether they are responding to emergencies, supporting vulnerable residents through community programs or working with healthcare partners.
Lanark County Paramedics respond to more than 16,000 patient calls each year across a large and growing geographic area.
The service also continues to expand community-based programs focused on prevention, early intervention and patient-centred care.
Officials say Community Paramedicine programs help residents stay safe and supported at home. They can also help reduce avoidable emergency department visits and improve access to care for vulnerable people.
Mississippi River Health Alliance President and CEO Brad Harrington said paramedics are playing an essential and more integrated role in healthcare.
He said the work done by Lanark County Paramedic Service shows a strong commitment to collaboration and healthier communities.
