Perth’s new Veterans Memorial Crosswalk is already becoming a beloved tribute in the community.
The crosswalk, located just outside the Crystal Palace, has been drawing strong and heartfelt reaction from residents since it was completed. Many say the tribute is beautiful, meaningful and long overdue.
We stopped by the site to get first impressions from people seeing it up close.
The memorial crosswalk came together after months of planning by Don Rideout, who helped lead the project from idea to reality. The work began shortly after Remembrance Day, and Rideout has said the support from the Town of Perth, the painting company and the wider community helped make it happen quickly.
The result is a bold public tribute that recognizes those who served, while also giving the community a daily reminder of the sacrifices made by veterans and current service members.
One man at the site summed up the reaction with clear emotion.
The crosswalk has already become more than a painted feature on the road. For many, it is a visible sign of respect in the heart of town, placed where residents and visitors will see it often.
Community reaction has been especially strong because the crosswalk honours both veterans and those who continue to serve today. That detail stood out for another person who stopped to take it in.
Organizers say the official dedication ceremony will take place Sunday at 1 p.m. just outside the Crystal Palace. All are welcome to attend. The ceremony is expected to include community leaders, music, and a formal dedication of the crosswalk. A gathering at the Perth Legion will follow.
Fundraising also continues to help with the long-term maintenance of the memorial, ensuring the crosswalk remains a lasting tribute in downtown Perth for years to come.
