The Smiths Falls Fire Department is using a new town bridge as a real-life training ground to make sure crews are ready before an emergency happens.
Lieutenant of Training Andrew Fleming says the exercise gave firefighters a chance to test where their large apparatus can safely park, how close crews can get, and what options are available if someone needs help from the bridge.
Fleming says the drill focused on a very specific situation.
The training also gave six firefighters preparing for an Office of the Fire Marshal pump course a chance to work around a structure they do not normally train on.
Fleming says crews learned small but important details, including that the truck may need to pull ahead another 15 feet in some situations.
Fleming says seconds can save minutes, and minutes can save lives.
He says the aerial truck also has strong safety technology, including sensors for wind and basket weight. He adds the basket is wheelchair accessible and can help bring someone down safely from an apartment or condo balcony.
Fleming says residents are always welcome to ask firefighters questions when they see training underway.
