A new weekly music series is adding another reason to spend summer evenings in downtown Perth.
Tunes on the Tay is scheduled to begin June 24 at the Terrace on the Tay, a riverside gathering space off Mill Street near the old swimming hole. Co-founder Brian Perkin says the project is meant to celebrate homegrown talent while giving developing artists a chance to build experience in front of a live crowd.
The setting is expected to be a major part of the experience. The Terrace on the Tay sits near the Dry Stone Bridge and offers a quiet, scenic backdrop along the water.
Perkin says the area has plenty of character and has not traditionally been part of Perth’s live entertainment circuit.
Tunes on the Tay is planned as a 10-week series, running Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Organizers already have several dates filled, but are continuing to build the schedule with a mix of musical styles, ages and experience levels.
The opening night will feature Perth favourite Matt Dixon and Julian Grew, a young performer from St. John Catholic High School.
Perkin says that mix of established and emerging musicians is part of what organizers hope will make the series meaningful for both artists and audiences.
Perth Tourism is partnering with ‘Tunes on the Tay’ by providing in-kind support for the 10-week series. Perkin says sponsorships would help make the series more sustainable and allow organizers to recognize the musicians taking part.
