Smiths Falls Community Food Bank says April was another busy month, as food bank use continues to rise locally and across Ontario.
Statistics shared by the food bank show 946 people used the service in April. That included 579 adults, 308 children and 59 seniors. Of those visitors, 24 were new to the food bank, while 922 had used the service before.
The numbers show the growing pressure on local hunger relief programs as more residents turn to community support for basic needs.
The food bank says it spent $14,175.76 on food during the month. It also received 5,164 pounds of food donations and gave out 18,858 pounds of perishable and non-perishable food.
Volunteers also played a major role, contributing 399 hours in April as demand remains high across the community now.
The local numbers follow a wider provincial trend. Feed Ontario’s 2025 Hunger Report says more than one million Ontarians used food banks between April 2024 and March 2025, making more than 8.7 million visits. It marked the ninth straight year of growth. 2026 is expected to follow suit.
The Smiths Falls Community Food Bank says its top needed items this month are cereal, stew, juice boxes and pudding cups.
